How to Prevail in Afflictions: Overcoming Challenges Through Faith

My dear friends, and fellow travelers on this journey of faith,
Life, as we all know, is not always smooth sailing. We encounter storms, challenges, and what the Bible refers to as “afflictions.” These can come in many forms – health issues, financial struggles, relationship difficulties, emotional distress, or even spiritual battles. When we face such trials, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed, perhaps even discouraged.
But I want to share a profound truth that has been a bedrock in my own life and ministry at GO Centre, a truth that I believe is vital for every believer: We are not meant to merely endure afflictions; we are called to prevail in them . This isn’t about pretending that pain doesn’t exist or that difficulties will magically disappear. Instead, it’s about understanding how to navigate these seasons with faith, emerging stronger and more deeply rooted in Christ.
The apostle Paul, who knew a thing or two about suffering, wrote, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). This isn’t a declaration of a problem-free life, but a testament to the power of God at work in us, even through our struggles.
So, how do we prevail?

  • Cling to the “Great Salvation”: As Hebrews 2:1 reminds us, we must “give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.” Our salvation in Christ is not just a ticket to heaven; it is our present reality and our anchor in every storm . When afflictions press in, it is crucial not to neglect or drift away from the foundational truths of our faith – the finished work of Christ, His unwavering love, and His constant presence.
  • Embrace the Living Word: God’s Word is not just a book of stories; it is “living and active,” a lamp to our feet and a light to our path . In times of affliction, immerse yourself in scripture. Let its truths renew your mind, guide your steps, and remind you of God’s faithfulness. It is through His Word that we receive strength, comfort, and the wisdom to respond to challenges in a way that honors Him.
  • Trust in His Presence: Even when circumstances are chaotic, remember that Christ Jesus is in you . His presence brings peace that transcends understanding, even in the midst of turmoil. My pastoral counseling often emphasizes empathy and understanding, because I know that connecting with Christ deeply allows us to navigate life’s challenges, transforming distress into growth .
  • Run to Win: This is a consistent message I share . Our Christian life is like a race, and God has equipped us to finish strong, to “prevail.” This means actively engaging our faith, not passively waiting for things to change. It involves prayer, seeking wise counsel, and taking steps of obedience, even when they feel difficult.
Afflictions are often God’s refining fire, purifying our faith and revealing His strength in our weakness. They are opportunities for spiritual growth and for us to experience God’s grace in profound new ways. As I strive to guide both new believers and seasoned Christians toward maturity in their faith, it’s clear that navigating these trials with biblical principles is key .
So, the next time you face an affliction, remember this: You are not alone, and you have been given everything you need to prevail. Lean on Christ, cling to His Word, and allow His power to work through you. You are called to “RUN TO WIN!” and through faith, you will overcome.
